What was once planted as a dream to travel the world eventually sprouted into a reality for Steve Norby. He is now building a new life in Spain, where he spends his time swimming in the Mediterranean, learning Spanish, and traveling throughout Europe.
But moving overseas didn’t eliminate the practical ties Steve still had to the United States, including banking, government documents, credit cards, and other important mail.

So, what inspired Steve to leave the familiar behind and build a life abroad, and how did having a reliable connection to home help make it possible?
Steve Norby spent decades imagining a life built around travel and discovery. When he finally had the opportunity to leave Kitsap permanently, he chose Spain as his home base.

From Dream to Departure
When I asked Steve what inspired him to leave the United States, he shared a story decades in the making.
“I learned to sail on Lake Tahoe when I was eight and decided that one day I would cross the South Pacific. Years later, my father bought a boat and lived the adventure I had imagined for myself. Every letter he sent reminded me: This was supposed to be my life.”
Those letters arrived while Steve was in dental school, buried under a demanding workload. His father wrote from Bora Bora, Moorea, and remote islands where he was meeting tribal elders, attending luaus, and dancing around beach bonfires.
Steve tried to be happy for him, but the stories stung. His father was living the adventure Steve had imagined for himself.
Years later, after his father returned from an epic five-year voyage, Steve realized that although they shared the same dream of adventure, their dispositions were very different.
Thirty days at sea with nothing to break the horizon suited his father just fine. For Steve, that was about 28 days too long. ” I love adventure and discovery, but I couldn’t tolerate the downtime.”
So Steve began imagining a different version of the dream. Europe offered a collection of “islands”, each with its own language, landscape and culture, connected not by sailboat, but by train.
After a divorce and years spent caring for his parents before they passed, Steve finally found himself free to make the leap.
He chose Spain as his home base because it reminded him of the California where he grew up: quiet coastal towns, clear blue water, friendly people, and an easygoing way of life.
A Glimpse Into Steve’s Life In Spain
Afterward, he might have lunch along the waterfront, study Spanish, or take a train to explore another coastal town. Evenings are relaxed—sometimes a movie at home, other times one of the festivals that seem to be a near-constant part of life in Spain.
When he attends language school in Barcelona, the pace changes. His mornings begin with reviewing notes and stopping at a café before four hours of intensive Spanish instruction.
The program lives up to its name. Steve spends much of the day trying to keep up with conversations conducted entirely in Spanish, and occasionally relying on the phrase No me entero: “I don’t understand.”
Afternoons may include city tours, wine tastings, or his favorite activity: rooftop salsa and bachata dancing. By the end of the day, he heads home, rewrites his notes, and falls asleep exhausted.
“Before settling in Spain there were times I would wake up in the night and I couldn’t remember what country I was in. Then it would come back to me and I would smile, so happy that life went from such a routine to… THIS.”
Managing Mail From Across The World
Moving abroad doesn’t mean your US mail disappears. Banking and credit card correspondence, government documents, replacement cards, and other important items still need a reliable place to land.

Steve may now live thousands of miles from Poulsbo, but he hasn’t stopped being part of the Vibe community.
